Introduction to Strategy : Chapter 1

SUMMARY: Different firms pursue a variety of strategies to stay successful over a period of time. Strategic management deals with the issues of staying perpetually successful. It deals with how a firm utilizes its resources and capabilities to counter or pre-empt competitive moves and succeed in the dynamic marketplace.

Igor Ansoff, Henry Mintzberg, Peter Drucker, Michael Porter, George Stalk, Philip Evans, Lawrence E. Shulman, C. K. Prahalad, Gary Hamel, and others have contributed to the evolution of the concept of strategy.

Strategy can be formulated at three levels, namely, the corporate level, the business level, and the functional level. Corporate strategy deals with decisions related to various business areas in which the firm operates and competes. At the business unit level, strategy is formulated to convert the corporate vision into reality.

At the functional level, strategy is formulated to realize the business unit level goals and objectives using the strengths and capabilities of the organization.

Organizations often fail to develop sound strategic management perspectives for various reasons. Some of these reasons are: lack of awareness within the top management team about the organization's real operating situation; 'kidding themselves' syndrome; vested interests of the managers; and excessive involvement of senior managers in everyday operational problems.
